Handcrafted journeys across Sri Lanka

Two monsoons, one island: when to go where

The secret is that Sri Lanka has no off-season — only a wrong coast. A designer's honest month-by-month.

Sri Lanka sits between two monsoons, and they take turns. From roughly December to April the south and west coasts are dry and bright; from May to September it is the east coast’s turn.

December – April

Galle, Mirissa, Bentota and the hill country at their clearest. Whale season off Mirissa. Horton Plains mornings are crisp and wide.

May – September

Trincomalee, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay shine. The Cultural Triangle stays largely dry. Minneriya’s elephant Gathering peaks in August.

October – November

The inter-monsoon months bring afternoon showers island-wide — and quiet roads, green hills and the best rates of the year.
